Lozère : A department of four very distinctive natural regions

The Cévennes and Mont Lozère
Lands of shale and granite slopes

Nature  is defiant but beautiful in the Cévennes. From Mont Aigoual to Mont Lozère  in  the  south-east  of  the  department. It is a land of shale and deep-cut  valleys, covered by forests of beech, spruce and chestnut. On its scarp  slopes,  terracing  made it possible to grow the "tree of gold", the famous  mulberry for the silk industry which made the fortune of the region and  which  was  gradually  replaced  by  the "bread tree", symbolic of the Cévennes, the chestnut which fed man and beast for centuries.

The Cévennes National Park was founded in 1970 and has worked ever since to conserve  this  environment but also, as it is the only national park to be inhabited, to develop a harmonious relationship between man and nature. In  the  west  rises  the  majestic  granite barrier of the Mont Lozère, in complete  contrast  with  the  sierra and valley landscape of the Cévennes. Known  as the mountain of springs and rising to a height of 1700 metres, it is unmatched for rambles and drives to admire its endless scenery.
